Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in on May 12, 2026, as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, becoming the first non-Congress leader in the state’s history to achieve this milestone.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the College of Veterinary Science Playground and was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

Historic Political Context

The NDA secured a third straight term in Assam after winning 102 of the 126 Assembly seats:

Bharatiya Janata Party: 82 seats
Asom Gana Parishad: 10 seats
Bodoland People’s Front: 10 seats

The BJP first came to power in Assam in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal. Leadership later transitioned to Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2021.
