Bremen: Kai Havertz helped Germany salvage a 3-3 draw with Ukraine in a charity friendly that left neither team happy from a sporting perspective on Monday. Viktor Tsyhankov had scored twice for Ukraine to come from behind and lead 3-1 in Serhiy Rebrov ’s debut as coach, putting his team on course for the country’s first ever win over Germany.

But Havertz pulled one back in the 83rd and was then fouled for a penalty that Joshua Kimmich converted in stoppage time for the equalizer. The German football federation was donating the proceeds to victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The match was also billed as the federation’s 1,000th, but the team’s performance will do little to restore battered German confidence a year before the country hosts the European Championship.

The buildup was overshadowed by the war in Ukraine with both teams taking to the field accompanied by children who had fled their country to escape the invasion. Every visiting player was draped in a Ukrainian flag. The teams posed for individual photos — with Ukraine’s in front of another giant blue-and-yellow flag — before German and Ukrainian players posed for a mixed photo behind a banner with the word “peace.”

The German players also had a peace symbol on the arms of their jerseys. Niclas Füllkrug, playing in his home stadium, was gifted a huge chance by Mykhailo Mudryk in the second minute but the Werder Bremen forward missed with only the goalkeeper to beat.

fddvfddvd

Füllkrug was credited with the opening goal in the sixth when he deflected Marius Wolf’s shot past Anatoliy Trubin in the visitors’ goal. Germany missed further good chances against the disorganized visitors before Tsyhankov equalized on a counterattack in the 19th.

Mudryk forced an own goal from Antonio Rüdiger four minutes later to make it 2-1, delighting the visiting supporters. The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, celebrated with restraint beside German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who smiled and held out his hand to congratulate him.

Buoyed by the goals, Ukraine pushed for more before the home team recovered. But it was a typical display of late from Germany — seemingly in control, creating chances, yet still prone to costly mistakes.

Coach Hansi Flick reacted by bringing on Havertz and Lukas Klostermann for the second half, but little changed. Artem Dovbyk capitalized on another mistake to set up Tsyhankov for the third goal in the 56th.

Further German mistakes led to whistles from some in the crowd. They were finally given reason to cheer when Rüdiger sent a long ball forward for Havertz to score.

Havertz was then fouled as he pushed for the equalizer and Kimmich, the Germany captain, made no mistake from the spot.

KYIV: The wall of a major dam in a part of southern Ukraine that Moscow controls collapsed Tuesday after a reported explosion, sending water gushing downriver and prompting dire warnings of ecological damage as officials from both sides in the war ordered residents to evacuate. Ukraine accused Russian forces of blowing up the dam and hydroelectric power station, while Russian officials blamed Ukrainian military strikes in the contested area.

The fallout could have far-reaching consequences: flooding homes, streets and businesses downstream; depleting water levels upstream that help cool Europe’s largest nuclear power plant; and draining supplies of drinking water to the south in Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed. The dam break added a stunning new dimension to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its 16th month. Ukrainian forces were widely seen to be moving forward with a long-anticipated counteroffensive in patches along more than 1,000 kilometers of frontline in the east and south of Ukraine.

It was not immediately clear whether either side benefits from the damage to the dam, since both Russian-controlled and Ukrainian-held lands are at risk of flooding. The damage could also potentially hinder Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the south, while at the same time Russia depends on the dam to supply water to the Crimea region it annexed illegally in 2014.

Amid official outrage, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council. He alleged that Russian forces set off a blast inside the dam structure at 2.50 am (2350 GMT) and said some 80 settlements were in danger. Ukraine’s nuclear operator Energoatom said in a Telegram statement that the damage to the dam ‘could have negative consequences” for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is Europe’s biggest, but wrote that for now the situation is ?controllable.’

The U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement there was ‘no immediate risk to the safety of the plant,’ which requires water for its cooling system. It said that IAEA staff on site have been told the dam level is falling by 5 centimeters an hour. At that rate, the supply from the reservoir should last a few days, it said.

The plant also has alternative sources of water, including a large cooling pond than can provide water ‘for some months,’ the statement said. Ukrainian authorities have previously warned that the dam’s failure could unleash 18 million cubic metres of water and flood Kherson and dozens of other areas where hundreds of thousands of people live.

The World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development, a Ukrainian nongovernmental organisation, estimated that nearly 100 villages and towns would be flooded. It also reckoned that the water level would start dropping only after five-seven days. A total collapse in the dam would wash away much of the broad river’s left bank, according to the Ukraine War Environmental Consequences Working Group, an organisation of environmental activists and experts documenting the war’s environmental effects.

Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that ‘a global ecological disaster is playing out now, online, and thousands of animals and ecosystems will be destroyed in the next few hours.’ Videos posted online began testifying to the spillover. One showed floodwaters inundating a long roadway; another showed a beaver scurrying for high ground from rising waters.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry called for residents of 10 villages on the Dnipro’s right bank and parts of the city of Kherson downriver to gather essential documents and pets, turn off appliances, and leave, while cautioning against possible disinformation. The Russian-installed mayor of occupied Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, said it was being evacuated as water poured into the city.

Ukraine controls five of the six dams along the Dnipro, which runs from its northern border with Belarus down to the Black Sea and is crucial for the entire country’s drinking water and power supply. Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, said in a video posted to Telegram shortly before 7 am that ‘the Russian army has committed yet another act of terror,’ and warned that water will reach ?critical levels? within five hours.

Ukraine’s state hydro power generating company wrote in a statement that ‘The station cannot be restored.’ Ukrhydroenergo also claimed that Russia blew up the station from inside the engine room. Leontyev, the Russian-appointed mayor, said Tuesday that numerous Ukrainian strikes on the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant destroyed its valves, and ‘water from the Kakhovka reservoir began to uncontrollably flow downstream.’

Leontyev added that damage to the station was beyond repair, and it would have to be rebuilt. Ukraine and Russia have previously accused each other of targeting the dam with attacks, and last October Zelenskyy predicted that Russia would destroy the dam in order to cause a flood. Authorities, experts and residents have for months expressed concerns about water flows through ‘and over’ the Kakhovka dam.

In February, water levels were so low that many feared a meltdown at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, whose cooling systems are supplied with water from the Kakhovka reservoir held up by the dam. By mid-May, after heavy rains and snow melt, water levels rose beyond normal levels, flooding nearby villages.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday supported the Narendra Modi-led government’s ‘neutral stance’ on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, despite the pressure it feels from the West. During his interaction with the Indian students at the Stanford University Campus in California, he said that India ‘has to look for its own interest’ at the end of the day.

“We have a relationship with Russia, we have certain dependencies on Russia. So, I would have a similar stance as the Government of India,” Rahul Gandhi said in response to a question when asked does he supports India’s neutral stance on Russia.

He added that India is a big enough country whereby it generally will have relationships with other countries. It’s not so small and dependent that it will have a relationship with one and nobody else, he said.

“We will always have these types of relationships. We will have better relationships with some people, evolving relationships with other people. So that balance is there,” the former Congress president, who is in the US for a three-city tour, said.

It is noteworthy that India has abstained from the UN resolutions on Ukraine and consistently underlined the need to respect the UN Charter, international law, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. India, however, has also consistently underlined that in the ongoing conflict, the entire Global South has suffered ‘substantial collateral damage’ and that the developing countries are facing the brunt of the conflict’s consequences on food, fuel, and fertilizer supplies.

He also supported a strong relationship between India and the United States and underscored the importance of manufacturing and both countries collaborating in emerging fields like data and artificial intelligence.

Simply focusing on the security and defence aspect of this bilateral relationship is not enough, Gandhi said.

India, China relationship is going to be ‘tough’

During his interaction, Rahul Gandhi also asserted that India cannot be pushed around by China as he underlined that the relationship between the two neighbours is going to be ‘tough’ and not an easy one.

“How do you see the India-China relationship evolving in the next 5-10 years?” Gandhi was asked, to which he replied, “It’s tough right now. I mean, they’ve occupied some of our territory. It’s rough. It’s not too easy (a relationship).”

“India cannot be pushed around. That something is not going to happen,” he added.

India and China are also locked in a lingering border standoff in eastern Ladakh for three years. The bilateral relationship came under severe strain following the deadly clash in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in June 2020.
