A Dalit BJP leader and former Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) corporator’s son was allegedly stabbed to death on the premises of a government hospital in Vadodara in the wee hours of Monday, said police, adding that five people, including the prime accused have been arrested.

According to the Vadodara City Police, the victim Tapan Parmar (35) was stabbed by key accused Babar Habib Pathan (32) on the premises of Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital at 1am Monday.

According to the police, Tapan had gone to the hospital to meet his two friends, who were injured in a clash with a group led by Babar Pathan in Nagarwada on Sunday. Police said at least three people were injured in that clash and later rushed to the SSG hospital.

The first FIR in connection with the case was lodged Monday at Karelibaug police station by Dharmesh Patel, who was one of the injured in the Nagarwada clash. The complainant alleged that accused Pathan had stabbed his acquaintance Vikram Parmar in his chest, stomach and back in Nagarwada.

Patel said that Vikram, who is the brother of his friend Divyang, along with some friends were sitting when Pathan and his aides arrived at the spot to attack Vikram.

“Vikram was bleeding from the stab wounds on his chest, stomach and back. He was being chased by Pathan and his aides. When I tried to intervene, they pelted stones at me and I sustained injuries on my head…” the FIR said.

As Divyang rushed Vikram and Dharmesh to hospital, Tapan also arrived at the hospital along with his father to “help in the formalities”, said the police.

Vadodara Joint Commissioner of Police Manoj Ninama told The Indian Express that according to the probe, the brawl started over recovery of gambling money, during which Babar’s aide Wasim Mansuri was injured. “Later, Babar and his aides decided to assault (Vikram) to avenge the attack on Wasim,” said Ninama.

The Joint Commissioner added that Babar later approached the Karelibaug police station to file an FIR against the other group. He, however, said, “While the police were in the process of taking the complaint, Babar said that he was feeling dizzy and nauseated as he was injured. The police officer asked him to come to SSG for a check up. At SSG, he went to the emergency ward to see Wasim, where his wife Shabnam allegedly instigated him, as per the complainant. Then, he walked out towards the canteen where he saw Tapan and stabbed him.”

Ninama said that an Assistant Commissioner of Police has been asked to submit an inquiry report as to how Pathan obtained the knife with which he stabbed Tapan, if he had been brought to the hospital by police. Ninama said, “If there is a case of negligence (on part of the accompanying police personnel), we will see… We have asked for the report to be submitted by Monday night.”

Two FIRs lodged

Ninama said, “The first FIR was lodged at Karelibaug police station in connection with an attempt to murder at Nagarwada and the second for the murder of Tapan Parmar, who was stabbed to death by Babar Pathan, at Raopura police station. Five people, including Wasim’s wife Shabnam, have been arrested in the murder case”.

The men arrested in the case are also named in the FIR lodged at Karelibaug. Accused Wasim Mansuri, who is hospitalised, has been placed under police security and will be arrested later, said police.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father and BJP leader Ramesh Parmar said that he had left the hospital after the injured were taken in for treatment. “As I reached the home of the injured and assured the families that their sons were doing better and things had been taken care of, I received a call that my son had been attacked with a sword… When I rushed to SSG, I realised that Tapan had already been killed,” Parmar said. As soon as the news of murder came out, leaders of the BJP Vadodara city unit and the VMC rushed to the hospital.

Later in the day, Tapan’s body was handed over to his family members after the post-mortem examination, police said.

According to the police, the FIR at Karelibaug has been registered against Babar Pathan, Wasim Mansuri, Salman Pathan, Mehboob Pathan and Ejaz Mopara under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)Sections 109 [attempt to murder], 117(2) [voluntarily causing grievous hurt], 118(1) [voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means], 125 [act endangering life or personal safety of others], 189(1)(d) [unlawful assembly by means of criminal force].

The Raopura FIR is registered under BNS Sections 103 [murder], 115(1) [Voluntarily causing hurt], 189(2) [intentionally joining unlawful assembly], 191(1) [rioting], and 61(1) [criminal conspiracy]. All accused, in both FIRs, have also been booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The advertisement carries Sena’s bow-and-arrow symbol and images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Shinde. It has no image or photo of Shiv Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray, a noticeable departure going by its earlier publicity materials. “For the chief minister’s position, 26.1 per cent of the people in Maharashtra desire Eknath Shinde and 23.2 per cent of the people wish to see Devendra Fadnavis as the next chief minister,” reads the advertisement.

Thus, it is undeniable proof that 49.3 per cent of the people in Maharashtra wish to see a strong alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena for their state’s leadership, it said. The figures and claims in the advertisement have been attributed to a Zee TV-Matrize survey. “According to the election surveys, 30.2 per cent of citizens of Maharashtra prefer Bharatiya Janata Party, while 16.2 per cent of citizens prefer the Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde). These numbers show that a total of 46.4 per cent people of Maharashtra trust the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance for the development of the state,” the advertisement said.

Responding to the advertisement, Sanjay Raut of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) said, “It was Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena earlier, but the advertisement has cleared the air. It has now become Modi-Shah’s Shiv Sena. Where is the image or photo of late Balasaheb Thackeray in the advertisement?”

State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, however, tried to downplay the advertisement. “It is always the election result that decides which party or leader is more acceptable to the voters. Shinde as a cabinet minister was popular earlier and now his acceptance has increased as the chief minister. People of the state have lots of expectations from Fadnavis, Shinde and Modi. As a state-level leader, the people of Maharashtra have given preference to Fadnavis twice, he said. ?There is no comparison between the Shiv Sena and BJP about who is a bigger or smaller party,” said Bawankule.

Chief spokesperson of the Maharashtra unit of Congress Atul Londhe called it a ‘false’ survey that he said Shinde has used to promote himself. “Once the election is over, Maha Vikas Aghadi will win more than 42 Lok Sabha seats (in Maharashtra) and 200 seats in the assembly for sure. A new story would be written about him (Shinde) as ‘once upon a time, there was Shinde’,” he said.

Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats and 288 Assembly constituencies. Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners – Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP – have asserted that they will fight the polls with maximum coordination. Bharat Gogawale, chief whip of the Shinde-led Sena said, “We never manage anyone to get a favourable survey. He (Shinde) is even accessible to people and visits all parts of the state. We have not asked any media house to conduct a survey for us.”

Air India has cancelled its flight scheduled to fly from San Francisco to Mumbai due to a technical issue in the Boeing 777 aircraft. While regretting the disruption to its customers, Air India said the affected people have been offered the option of alternative flights or a full refund for the cancelled flight.

Flight AI180 was scheduled to operate from San Francisco to Mumbai on June 8 and was cancelled due to an “unforeseen technical issue”. Sources said the flight was initially delayed by a few hours due to some issues with an aircraft tyre, and subsequently, the flight was cancelled. Details about the number of passengers who had booked the flight could only be ascertained after a period of time.

On June 6, an Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew on board was diverted to the Magadan port city in far east Russia following a mid-air glitch in one of the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft engines. All were stranded in the port city for two days, and the replacement aircraft ferried them to San Francisco on June 8.

NEW DELHI: It could be a ‘make or break’ day for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Shiv Sena faction led by him as a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court is set to pronounce on Thursday its verdict on a batch of petitions filed by rival Shiv Sena in connection with the Maharashtra political crisis. The bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud also comprises Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha.

What Is The Matter?

The Supreme Court bench is expected to decide whether Eknath Shinde and 15 other Shiv Sena MLAs could be disqualified for revolting against then CM Uddhav Thackeray in June last year.

Uddhav Thackeray had pleaded before the Supreme Court to step in after Shinde, backed by the opposition BJP, engineered a split into Shiv Sena and later formed a new government in Maharashtra with the support of majority MLAs.

What If Shinde Is Disqualified?

If Eknath Shinde is disqualified, he will have to resign as Maharashtra Chief Minister and his government will be disbanded.

In August last year, the top court’s three-judge bench had referred to a five-judge Constitution bench the issues involved in the petition filed by rival groups of Shiv Sena in relation to the Maharashtra political crisis.

The bench then said that some of the issues involved in the Maharashtra political crisis may require a larger Constitution bench for consideration. There are various petitions pending before the apex court filed by both factions of Shiv Sena. On June 29, 2022, the top court gave a go-ahead to the floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly on June 30.

It had refused to stay the Maharashtra Governor’s direction to the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to prove his majority support on the floor of the House on June 30. After the apex court’s order, Uddhav Thackeray announced his resignation as the Chief Minister and Eknath Shinde was later sworn in as the Chief Minister. 

Power Struggle In Shiv Sena

Amid a power struggle between the Shinde and the Uddhav factions, the Election Commission had allotted the Shiv Sena party name and its bow-and-arrow symbol to Eknath Shinde-led group. Thackeray’s smaller faction was given the name Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) and the symbol of a flaming torch.

Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued for Uddhav Thackeray’s team in the court while Harish Salve, Neeraj Kaul, and Mahesh Jethmalani represented Eknath Shinde’s camp.
