It’s a joyous occasion for Tuba Bashir, Rutba Bashir, and Arbish, three cousin sisters from Nowshera in Srinagar, as they successfully cracked the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG Exam. Their remarkable achievement has brought immense celebration within their family. Tuba Basheer expressed her happiness, stating, “I feel great that all three of us have cleared NEET together because we went to school and coaching together. We always aspired to clear MBBS and become doctors. I am thrilled because my hard work has paid off and yielded results.”

Rutaba Basheer, who also cleared the NEET, expressed deep gratitude towards her parents for their support. She said, “We are extremely happy. We started preparing for the NEET exam from the 11th standard itself and practiced rigorously. The credit for our success goes to our parents; they have supported us since childhood.”

Urbish also shared her immense joy and spoke about her journey, saying, “I am feeling very happy. There was no doctor in our family, but it was my own decision to become a doctor. Kupwara Encounter: 5 Terrorists Killed By Security Forces Near LoC In J&K, Search Operation On

Kupwara: In a big breakthrough, five foreign terrorists have been killed in the encounter that broke out between terrorists and security personnel near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday. “Five foreign terrorists killed in the encounter, search operation underway,” Additional Director General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said.

The encounter began after the Indian Army and J&K Police launched a joint operation on Thursday night based on specific input about the presence of terrorists in the Jumagund area near the LoC in the north Kashmir district.

“An encounter has started between the terrorists and joint parties of Army & Police on a specific input of Kupwara Police in Jumagund area of LoC of Kupwara district. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet earlier.

Meanwhile, a massive search and combing operation is underway in the area. The ongoing encounter is part of a series of counter-infiltration operations foiled by the security forces in recent.

On Thursday, Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Poonch sector and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition. On June 13, two terrorists were neutralised in a joint operation of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the border area of Kupwara district.

Since February, 10 major infiltration attempts have been foiled across the Line of Control, indicating Pakistan’s desperation to push terrorists into the Indian side of the border in J&K.

NASA Releases Satellite Image Of Kashmir’s Shrinking Wular And Dal Lakes; What Led To Their Decline?

National Aeronautics and Space Administrations (NASA) on Tuesday shared images of two major freshwater lakes in Kashmir Valley that show a significant decline. This picture of Kashmir’s Wular and Dal lake was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 satellite on June 23, 2020. Wanmei Liang took the photograph for NASA Earth Observatory using Landsat data from the US Geological Survey. Emily Cassidy wrote a report that explains the causes behind the shrinking lakes of Kashmir.

The image shows two water bodies. The larger water body is Wular Lake, which is on the left side of the image. It is the biggest freshwater lake in India and one of the biggest in Asia. The lake is part of the Jhelum River and provides freshwater and fish to the people living nearby. The lake has several wetlands around it that are home to migratory birds, such as ducks, shorebirds, geese, and cranes. The lake is a “wetland of international importance” according to Ramsar International, which gave it this designation in 1990.

The smaller one is Dal, which lies in the middle of Srinagar, the valley’s largest city. The lake draws tourists with its house boats, markets, and marshes that float on the water. Around the lake, there are terraced gardens with fountains and various plants.

Reasons Behind Wular Lake’s Shrinking

Eutrophication

The report says that influx of sediment and nutrients into the lake of over the past few decades has contributed to rapid growth in Algae and aquatic vegetation. The report cites Eutrophication, a process where organic and mineral nutrients supporting an abundant aquatic plant life, which in the process of decaying depletes the oxygen supply.

Urbanisation

According to the report, the conversion of forests into urban areas is a major cause behind the change in water quality. Discharge of heavy sediment, nutrient loads and untreated sewage into the lake has equally contributed in the shrinking. “Researchers in India used water samples and data from Landsat satellites to assess the biological health of the lake. They found that about 57 percent of Wular Lake was eutrophic in 2018,” the report mentions.

The report states that some of bright green area on the eastern side of Wular lake which used to be open water has now turned into nutrient-rich sediment and aquatic vegetation have filled in parts of the lake and contributed to its shrinking in recent decades.

Reason Behind Dal Lake’s Area Decline

The smaller Dal Lake has suffered a similar fate in response to land cover change. Researchers in Srinagar found that land conversion to urban development in the basin had worsened the lake’s water quality and contributed to its reduced size.

Percent Of Area Already Shrunk

A 2022 research using data from the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) LISS-IV instrument—found that Wular Lake’s open water area had shrunk in size by about one-quarter between 2008 and 2019. They found that between 1980 and 2018, Srinagar’s famous Dal lake shrunk in area by 25 percent

Earthquake In Jammu-Kashmir: Tremors Felt In Mountain Regions

New Delhi: On Monday, there were powerful earthquake shocks detected in regions of North India and the Delhi-NCR region. The earthquake, which occurred around 1:30 PM, lasted for 20 seconds. According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 had an epicenter at Doda in Jammu and Kashmir and sent powerful vibrations throughout north India.

Informing about the latest earthquake, National Center for Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:5.4, Occurred on 13-06-2023, 13:33:42 IST, Lat: 33.15 & Long: 75.82, Depth: 6 Km ,Location: Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, India for more information Download the BhooKamp App.”

However, there was no immediate damage or reported casualties elsewhere. Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jammu and Kashmir, among other nearby areas, felt the earthquake’s tremors. Initial reports said that the earthquake’s shocks were so powerful that they could be felt in far-off locations including Islamabad, Lahore, and surrounding Pakistani regions.

Earthquake Tremors Felt In Chandigarh

The people of Chandigarh also felt the tremors in Chandigarh. The users started posting memes and videos on the social people on how they felt those trembles.

Infiltration Bid Foiled Along LoC In Jammu And Kashmir’s Poonch, Three Arrested

New Delhi: A major infiltration attempt to smuggle arms and drugs was thwarted by the Indian Army in which three people were arrested after a shootout near the border fence along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.”One Army soldier and one of the arrested infiltrators were injured in the firing at forward Karmara village in Gulpur sector in the early hours of the day,” PTI quoted officials as saying. They said border troops detected suspicious movement and confronted the persons which resulted in a gunfight.

“The area was immediately sealed off and three people, one of them with a bullet wound in his leg, were nabbed along with a haul of drugs and weapons, while an Army soldier was also hurt,” the officials said.

The officials named the arrested smugglers as Mohd Farooq (26), who sustained a leg injury, Mohd Riaz (23) and Mohd Zubair (22), all residents of Karmara.

They are suspected to have received the arms and drug shipment from across the border and were attempting to smuggle it into this side when they were stopped by the troops.

The items recovered from the arrested smugglers included an AK rifle, two pistols, six grenades, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) hidden inside a pressure cooker and 20 packets of presumed heroin.

The officials said the search operation in the area is still underway when last reports came in.
