The best teacher, it is claimed, is experience. Experience gives us the chance to learn new things. In our success story of the day, we will learn about an 8th pass man from Rajasthan who, rather than through technical prowess or academic training, created an Indian snack that became a global craze.

Based on his years of experience, Shivratan Agarwal founded the Bikaji brand and grew it into a multi-crore rupee business. Shivratan’s entrepreneurial path is proof that experience is one of the best ways to learn new things. Nothing helps you gain a sense of something like doing it yourself.

Who Is Shivratan Agarwal?

Shivratan Agarwal is the founder and director of Bikaji brand. The brand offers bhujia, namkeen, packaged sweets, papad as well as other munchies. Bikaji is India’s third-largest traditional snack manufacturer. Bikaji was conferred the National Award for Industrial Excellence in 1992.

Early Life Of Shivratan Agarwal

Shivratan Agarwal is the grandson of Gangabhisan ‘Haldiram’ Bhujiawala whose business was famous as ‘Haldiram’. Shivratan’s father Moolchand was also in the bhujia making business. Since his childhood Shivratan used to take keen interest in snacks making and learnt bhuia making from his grand father. Shivratan pursued education only till class 8 and then ventured in his family business.

The Birth Of Bikaji

In the late 80s, Shivratan decided to follow his heart and forge a new identity for himself in the snacks making business. Giving the globe an authentic taste of Indian culture was Agarwal’s dream. So, he launched his Bikaneri Bhujia business in 1987. The bhujia business was renamed as Bikaji brand in 1993.

The Hardships Shivratan Endured And How He Elevated Bikaji To International Prominence

The journey of the Bikaji Group has been filled with hardship, triumph, and accomplishment. Shivratan, the founder of Bikaji, did not have an easy journey. For a very long period, Shivratan battled to introduce the bhujia brand to the world. Agarwal was successful in laying the groundwork for his dream business at a period when there was no technology available to create bhujia on a wide scale. He began producing bhujia utilising machines. He even made a trips abroad to learn how to use machinery to create snacks.

Under Shivratan’s capable direction, the hitherto unorganised bhujia manufacturing sector was converted into an industry unto itself. Today, Bikaji is one of the world’s largest producers of bhujia and has a significant global presence.

Bikaji Signs Up Amitabh Bachchan As Brand Ambassador

Bikaji has roped in megastar Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador. With the brand campaign, ‘Amitji Loves Bikaji’, the company aims to make brand the go-to snack with everyone.

Bikaji IPO In Stock Market

Bikaji has also listed on the stock market. The IPO of Bikaji opened for subscription on November 3, 2022.

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday announced the arrest of Maharashtra-based businessman Sagar Maruti Suryawanshi, related to a Rs 429 crore bank fraud case.

The arrest was made in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Seva Vikas Co-operative Bank fraud case, in which the bank suffered a loss of Rs 429 crore across 124 non-performing asset (NPA) loan accounts.

This led to the bank going bankrupt, causing losses to thousands of small depositors.

The ED initiated the PMLA investigation based on multiple FIRs registered in Pune against loan defaulters, including Amar Mulchandani (the former chairman of the bank), its directors, and officials.

“Investigation has revealed that the bank was being run like a family proprietorship by Amar Mulchandani without following any prudent banking norms. Loans were sanctioned in return for massive kickbacks. More than 92 per cent of the loan accounts had turned into NPAs, which ultimately led to the collapse of the bank. The RBI has cancelled the bank’s license,” said an ED official.

The ED found that Suryawanshi and his relatives had defrauded the bank for an amount of Rs 60.67 crore across 10 NPA loan accounts.

They obtained loans in connivance with Amar Mulchandani, without having sufficient creditworthiness or repaying capacity.

After the arrest, he was produced before a special PMLA Court in Mumbai, which has sent him to ED’s custody until June 26.

Earlier, properties worth Rs 122.35 crore were provisionally attached in this case.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday warned Facebook that it would consider issuing an order to close down the social media giant’s activities in India following its alleged non-cooperation with the state police over investigation of the case of an imprisoned Indian citizen in Saudi Arabia.

A bench of Justice Krishna S. Dixit gave the warning while taking up a petition submitted by Kavitha, a resident of Bikarnakatte near Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district.

“The complete report with required information should be submitted in a week before the court,” the bench directed Facebook.

It also said that the Central government should give information on what action has ibeen initiated in the case of arrest of an Indian citizen in a false case. Mangaluru police also will have to take up proper investigation and submit a report, the court said, adjourning the hearing to June 22.

Kavitha, in her plea, said that her husband Shailesh Kumar, 52 worked with a company in Saudi Arabia for 25 years, while she lived at her native place with their children.

She said that he had put up a message on Facebook in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in 2019 but unknown people opened a fake Facebook account in his name, and posted objectionable posts against the King of Saudi Arabia and Islam. As soon as it came to his knowledge, Kumar had informed the family and Kavitha had lodged a police complaint in Mangaluru in this regard. However, Saudi police had arrested Shailesh Kumar and put him in prison.

The Mangaluru police taking up the investigation had written a letter to Facebook and sought information on the opening of the fake Facebook account. But, Facebook had not responded to the police. In 2021, petitioner had approached the High Court questioning delay in the investigation.

Kavitha had also written a letter to the Central government to get her husband released from the prison.

The Significance of AWS India Investment

AWS’ investment of 12.7 billion USD in India is significant, as it will support the digitalization of the Indian economy and meet future infrastructure demand. With Asia Pacific being one of the fastest-growing cloud markets globally, this move by AWS further solidifies their comprehensive cloud offering broadly adopted in the region. As a result, there will be an increased demand for competency from startups, SMEs and Enterprises alike. According to Praveena Shenoy, Country Manager at Opsio’s office in Bangalore, this investment by AWS is likely to trigger huge demand for OPSIO services as well.

In conclusion, AWS’ decision to invest 4 billion USD annually in India for three years represents a catalyst towards realizing India’s vision of becoming a $5 trillion economy. This strategic move shows that companies are recognizing the potential growth opportunities within India’s digitization agenda and want to be part of its success story while also ensuring they have access to high-quality talent and infrastructure needed today more than ever before due to remote working trends caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite progress being made towards comprehensive digitalisation there remain challenges: lack of high-quality internet access particularly outside major cities; regulatory burdens that make it difficult for small enterprises or start-ups whichare essential sources for economic growth; cybersecurity threats such as data breaches or cyber attacks could impact public confidence without proper measures taken both from private and government entities.

Meeting Future Infrastructure Demand

New Delhi: Internet and search engine giant Google is today a name to reckon with. We all know that Google was founded by computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin –both were PhD candidates at Stanford University in California. However, there is one name behind the internet search engine giant, without whom, Google would not have been what it is today.
Today we shall tell you about late professor Rajeev Motwani, whose mentorship and guidance led to the formation of Google as we know today.

Rajeev Motwani was a renowned Stanford professor who was well-known for mentoring and counselling the founders of firms like Google and PayPal

Rajeev Motwani’s Glorious Career

Motwani, a student at New Delhi’s famous St. Columba’s School, was born on March 26, 1962, in Jammu and Kashmir. He arrived in the US to complete his PhD in computer science at University of Berkeley in 1988 after receiving his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from IIT Kanpur in 1983. He soon attended Stanford shortly after that.

He contributed to the creation of cutting-edge data and management ideas as the project’s originator, the Mining Data at Stanford Project (MIDAS). Motwani won the Godel Prize in 2001 for his work on the PCP theorem and its applications to the hardness of approximation. He was renowned for his theoretical computer science research.

Motwani Died At An Early Age Of 47 In An Unusual Drowning Accident

Rajeev Motwani was only 47 when passed away in an unusual drowning accident. The body of Motwani was discovered in his Palo Alto, California, backyard pool. His passing has shocked the Silicon Valley and the global tech community because he was credited with being the primary thinker behind several significant internet innovations, including PayPal and Google. The cause of his passing was unknown, according to the authorities. He was discovered dead in the pool, and paramedics were called.

Google Co-founder Sergey Brin Mourning Motwani’s Death

On his blog, Google co-founder Sergey Brin described Rajeev Motwani as his friend and teacher, adding that “Today, whenever you use a piece of technology, there is a good chance a little bit of Rajeev Motwani is behind it.” As Google emerged from Stanford, Brin wrote: “Rajeev remained a friend and advisor as he has with many people and startups since. Of all the faculty at Stanford, it is with Rajeev that I have stayed the closest and I will miss him dearly. Yet his legacy and personality lives on in the students, projects, and companies he has touched.”

Motwani Impacted Hundreds Of Business Owners And Students

At a San Francisco gathering, Motwani’s longtime buddy Ron Conway told a group of techies that he had an impact on hundreds of business owners and students and that he never turned down an invitation.

“For those of you who didn’t know Rajeev, you might get the impression that he was your typical Silicon Valley insider — loud, brash, full of bravado.” “Rajeev was soft spoken and gentle. He was self-confident but didn’t feel the need to prove anything. He didn’t speak to hear his own voice. And he didn’t need to be the centre of attention.

New Delhi: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Friday said that he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital and discussed India’s incredible tech ecosystem with him.

Altman, who also addressed students and others at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) earlier this week, said that he had a great conversation with odi.

“Great conversation with @narendramodi discussing India’s incredible tech ecosystem and how the country can benefit from AI,a he Altman tweeted.

“Really enjoyed all my meetings with people in the @PMOIndia,” he added.

Earlier, Altman said that the company behind ChatGPT is not presently training GPT5 — the successor to GPT4.

“We have a lot of work to do before GPT5. It takes a lot of time. We are nowhere close to it,” Altman said at a conference hosted by The Economic Times in Delhi.

“We’re working on the new ideas that we think we need for it, but we are nowhere close to the start. There need to be more safety audits: I wish I could tell you about the timeline of the next GPT,” he added.

Altman’s comments come amid growing concern among AI researchers and Big Tech executives about the alarming pace at which the technology is developing.

In March, several top entrepreneurs and AI researchers, including Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple, wrote an open letter, asking all AI labs to immediately pause training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.

Over 1,100 global AI researchers and executives signed the open letter to pause “all giant AI experiments”.

After a few weeks, Altman acknowledged that the letter lacked the most technical nuance, but asserted that OpenAI hadn’t started training GPT-5 and wouldn’t do so for “some time”.

In May, Altman admitted that if generative AI technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong, as US Senators expressed their fears about AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

Altman, who testified at a hearing in the US Senate in Washington, D.C., said that the AI industry needs to be regulated by the government as AI becomes “increasingly powerful”.

New Delhi: Global food and beverages major PepsiCo has launched Crop Intelligence Model for India with an aim to assist farmers in maximising potato yields and quality through useful dashboards and user-friendly mobile applications.

The initiative, jointly introduced with Cropin–a leading global agri-tech company, is a part of PepsiCo’s Precision Agriculture model in India for its Lay’s brand of chips.

Employing practical dashboards on user-friendly mobile apps, a crop and plot-level predictive intelligence technology will assist farmers in maximising potato yields and quality. The initiatibe has been implemented as a pilot project in demo farms at Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Currently, the model covers 62 farms as a trial: 51 in Gujarat and 11 in Madhya Pradesh, said the company in a statement.

Field agronomists who are assisting the farmers in using the insights and the dashboard during the pilot stage are giving them the necessary instruction and support.

The majority of farmers in India have less than one hectare of land under cultivation, and they frequently experience difficulties because they lack the tools necessary to determine how much water, fertiliser, pesticide, and other agri-inputs should be used when growing crops. For instance, if the potato blight crop disease is not anticipated in advance, yield losses from the crop can reach 80%. Another significant problem for potato farmers, particularly in the country’s north, is production loss due to ground frost, highlighted PepsiCo.

The FMCG major added that the new initiative under the PepsiCo-owned brand “Lay’s” has the potential to address these challenges by using satellite imagery correlated with remote sensing data to provide insights.

“The system can generate a forecast up to 10 days in advance which can assist farmers in identifying different crop stages, and close monitoring of crop health, including a disease warning system that relies on weather forecasts and historical data” PepsiCo said in a statement.

The dashboards and related information would be accessed by the farmers through easy-to-use smartphone-based apps, namely “Cropin Grow” for farm data management and “Plot Risk” for crop intelligence. The apps can support multiple languages, and PepsiCo plans to offer the solutions in 14 regional languages

Anukool Joshi, Director – Agro at PepsiCo India, said, “Through our partnership with Cropin on this new initiative, our goal is to eventually roll-out this solution to PepsiCo farmers across India and empower them with real-time tracking of crop health to maximize yield and quality.”

Krishna Kumar, Co-Founder & CEO, Cropin, said, “PepsiCo through its brand Lay’s has been leading the way to enable agriculture modernization and its impact at the grassroots level. Using Cropin’s proven plot-level predictive intelligence solution, PepsiCo is mitigating business risks and forecast crop yield and health, water stress, pest and disease early warning signals for efficient business management.”

In India, PepsiCo works directly and indirectly with over 27,000 farmers across 14 states and 100% of the potatoes for its “Lay’s” brand are sourced from farmers within the country.

Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday told a special court here that it received a sanction from the ICICI Bank’s board to prosecute Chanda Kochhar, the former CEO and MD of the bank, in connection with a case of alleged cheating and irregularities in loans sanctioned by the bank to Videocon Group companies.

The probe agency, represented by special public prosecutor A Limosin, told the court that the board of ICICI Bank in a resolution passed on April 22 this year gave its sanction to the prosecution (against Kochhar), accepting that there seemed to be quid pro-quo. Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar were arrested by the central probe agency in December last year in connection with the case.

The Bombay High Court later granted interim bail to the couple (Kochhars) and came down heavily on the CBI for making the arrest in a “casual and mechanical” manner and without application of mind. The agency had also arrested Videocon group founder Venugopal Dhoot.

He has also been granted interim bail. The CBI had named the Kochhars and Dhoot, along with companies Nupower Renewables (NRL) managed by Deepak Kochhar, Supreme Energy, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Limited, as accused in the First Information Report (FIR) registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2019.

The CBI has alleged that ICICI Bank had sanctioned credit facilities to the tune of Rs 3,250 crore to the companies of Videocon Group promoted by Dhoot in violation of the Banking Regulation Act, RBI guidelines, and credit policy of the bank.

New Delhi: Largest tech company TCS on Tuesday said attrition among its women employees has raced past the same for men, hinting that the end of work-from-home may have a role to play in it. Its chief human resources officer Milind Lakkad said that historically, the attrition among women employees who constitute over 35 percent of the over 6 lakh-strong workforces has been lower or similar to that of men, and called the development “unusual”.

“…I would think working from home during the pandemic reset the domestic arrangements for some women, keeping them from returning to office even after everything normalised,” he said in an interview published in the company’s annual report.

Lakkad acknowledged that the higher attrition among women is a “setback” to the Tata Group company’s efforts to promote gender diversity and added that the company is focusing on reversing the trend.

The annual report did not reveal the exact attrition number on the basis of gender. Its overall attrition peaked in the middle of the fiscal gone by and came down to over 20 percent at the end of March.

Lakkad said focused leadership development programmes like ‘iExcel’ are driving change on this front. The annual report said the flagship executive leadership development programme for women has completed 22 editions and 1,450 women leaders have benefitted from it.

Women made up nearly a fourth of the leadership positions fulfilled with internal candidates in FY23, even though they account for only 14 percent of the applicant pool, Lakkad said.

“This speaks well of the quality of the women candidates in our leadership pool as well as the supportive attitudes of our business leaders in promoting diversity,” he added.
Women constituted 38.1 percent of TCS’ net hires in FY23, Lakkad said.

‘Rebegin’ — a TCS initiative for experienced women professionals re-entering the workforce after a break — saw nearly 14,000 job applications in FY23, the annual report said.

Of the nearly 30,000 employees classified as senior management, almost 4,000 or over 13 percent were women, the annual report said.

It also said that TCS has introduced a policy on flexible work arrangements, which provides necessary support and flexibility for caregivers of young children, expectant women employees, and persons with disability.

TCS, which has been pushing employees to resume working from offices lately to deepen the organisational culture, said that it does not discriminate between genders on remuneration.
